Madras High Court Court directive on moral education
The Madras High Court has ordered that educational authorities should discuss the issue of introducing moral studies in primary education and take a decision in accordance with law.
The First Bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation petition by V. Kasinatha Bharathi, an advocate.
The petitioner stated that nowadays moral education was not being taught to students. This was resulting in their aggressive behaviour.
He cited various instances, including the fatal stabbing of a school teacher by her own student at George Town recently. Moral studies, physical education training and yoga classes alone would create better citizens of tomorrow.
Detailed representation
The petitioner had sent a detailed representation to the authorities on March 1. Till date there was no reply. Hence, he filed the present petition.
The Bench directed the petitioner to produce a copy of the court order along with his representation to the Education Secretary and the Director of School Education who should discuss the issue and take an appropriate decision.
